Welcome to the Student Wellness Week organised by Peer Helpers, NPYA Pacers and BA Pastoral Care! We are kicking off this Student Wellness Week on 10th October because it is World Mental Health Day. World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. Did you know the colour of the ribbon that symbolises mental health? It is green! Now you know why our website is mostly green!

Interactive Talk with Mr Shazuan Shiraj  

​

10 October 2020 (Saturday), 3p.m.- 4 p.m. 

​

A 20-minute sharing about Mr Shazuan’s mental health journey and a short interactive Q&A. Catch his TEDxYouth Talk on our website too! 

​

Mr Shazuan Shiraj is a third year Nanyang Polytechnic student pursuing Diploma in Social Work. He is a singer-songwriter and rapper who goes by the stage name ABANGSAPAU. He recently performed at this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) evening show. He was once known as a youth-at-risk after going through being bullied, transferring from the Express to Normal (Academic) stream, changing school and adjusting to a single-parent family situation. Shazuan aims to uplift people by spreading positive energy through his social work and music. He has also been awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Model Student Award and Lee Kwan Yew Gold Medal. He has even given a TEDx talk to inspire others through his journey.

Interactive Workshop with Hush TeaBar

12 October 2020 (Monday), 2p.m.- 3p.m.

Pause. To reconnect. Guided by facilitators who are hearing impaired. Be immersed in experiential empathy, receiving and giving peer support in a safe place in silence. Do prepare a cup of tea or beverage of your choice, and writing materials.  

​

Hush TeaBar is a social movement that champions self-care, social inclusion and mental wellness in every workplace, school and community, through taking a pause amidst the daily hustle and bustle. To promote inclusion and empowerment, Hush's core team comprises of the Deaf, hearing, and persons with lived mental health experience. Together, Hush aims to build an empathetic, resilient and inclusive society, one cup of tea at a time.

Mr Kevin Wee 

​

Mr Kevin Wee runs Rebound with Resilience, a training company committed to raising the resilience and empathy of our nation’s youth. As a social enterprise, they run experiential classroom workshops, and train and work with people with disabilities to conduct talks and training. They also run programmes for schools and organizations. They commit to empower every single student to turn “failure” into mastery and pain into power.

Mr Jonathan Kuek  

​

Jonathan Kuek is a doctoral candidate and mental health researcher at the University of Sydney, specializing in recovery approaches to the management and understanding of mental health conditions. He is a published author and serves as a journal reviewer for other peer-reviewed journals. Jonathan is an active mental health advocate, volunteer group leader, and strong believer in youth volunteerism and empowerment. In his free time, he mentors undergraduate psychology students, manages the SG Psych Stuff society as its vice-president, manages public education programs for the Singapore Psychological Society as its deputy chair of the public education team, and provides various forms of support for multiple social service organizations in Singapore.

Interactive Workshop by Resilience Collective 

​

14 October 2020 (Wednesday), 2p.m.-3p.m. 

​

The session will centre on "What a Mental Health Crisis can teach you", a video recording of Emmeline sharing her story. Integrated with this will be short polls and surveys, and interactive Q&As. 

​

Resilience Collective is a Peer-Powered Platform for Mental Health and Wellness. They actively give a voice to the lived experience, reducing stigma and building a safe space for open discussions around mental illness and recovery, and mental wellness in general. Co-founded by BinjaiTree and Caregivers Alliance Limited, with strong support from the National Council of Social Service and the Institute for Mental Health, they are poised to make a difference in the mental health community. They aim to lead the peer support movement in Singapore, and to equip and empower persons in recovery through education, peer support, and stigma reduction.

About Us

As you go through the materials we have specially prepared for you all on this website, you will learn about the importance of mental wellness, taking care of yourself and being there for those around you. Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health. You will learn some very useful peer helping tips too! You can use these peer helping tips to support your friends or anyone you know through their tough times. Actively participate in all the activities and stand a chance to win attractive prizes!

Peer Helpers:

The only CCA in NP that focuses on mental wellness. We organise super fun workshops about mental health so that students can expand their knowledge on mental health issues and peer helping. An example of a workshop we have organised is a Depression workshop conducted by The Lion Mind. Not only that, we conduct biweekly sharing sessions on Thursday where students get together and share their problems anonymously. If you would like to be a part of this meaningful CCA where you can meet many other like-minded people, do sign up to be a peer helper using the form here. We welcome everyone, be part of the family today!

NPYA:

As the student body of NP Youth Academy, NPYA Pacers empower students to plan and organise programmes for the school community. With a focus on Personal Effectiveness, Student Leadership and Community Engagement, we believe that every student matters. NPYA Pacers regularly conducts Speaker Series, self-development workshops, and learning journeys to build a holistic education experience for you.

Ms Law Mei Ting is a recipient of The Straits Times Generation Grit Award 2019. She recently completed her degree in Business Management at the University of London and is currently working as a Finance Executive at New Life Community Services. She was sexually abused when she was three years old. She struggled with anger, shame, and a low self-esteem for years. After many years of counselling, she has started to speak up and share about her experiences
