Learning About Depression 101

Did you know that depression is the most common mental illness in Singapore, and 1 out of 17 Singaporeans will have exhibited depression symptoms at least once in their lifetime?

Watch this video to learn more about depression, and how acceptance and support help in recovery.

Depression is a mood disorder that is characterised by persistent feelings of sadness that heavily impairs one’s life. This means that feeling sad or upset every once in a while is not considered as depression, those feelings are perfectly normal and it only becomes a problem when it interferes with your daily life for 2 weeks.

Here are the signs and symptoms of depression:

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood

  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies or activities

  • Decreased energy, fatigue, or being “slowed down”

  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions

  • Difficulty sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping

  • Appetite and/or weight changes

  • Thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts

  • Restlessness or irritability

  • Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems without a clear physical cause and/or that do not ease even with treatment

In this video, you will hear some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding depression and better understand why we need to fight the stigma, discrimination and isolation of people with depression.

If you know of someone fighting depression, how can you help?

  • Always lend a listening ear to those who confide in you.

  • Do not give them advice

  • Do not say things that will delegitimise their experiences and make them feel that their feelings are invalid.

  • Suggest to the person to seek out professional help.

  • Be patient, understanding and empathetic
